Convalesce with Books © Beverley Paine, 2004 I can't imagine sitting in a hospital bed now without a pile of books or magazines on my knees. When my children were unwell I'd make a bed on the couch for them and surround them with lots of reading material that ranged from novels, to picture books, comic books, magazines, non-fiction titles with lots of pictures, books with small and large print (for when eyes get tired). When I didn't have time to sit and play card, dice or board games, or in between favourite programs or a specially borrowed movie, the child had plenty to read. Simple craft and art activities, together with their personal journal or a scrapbook and a lush green pot plant nearby completed the sick-bed scene. Being happily occupied can often divert attention from illness and pain. Sometimes if our children are vey unwell we need to understand they might not have the energy to read, but still feel restless and feel sorry for themselves. Reading to them, perhaps a chapter or a picture book every hour, will help to break the monotony and tedium of being confined to bed. Was this article helpful? Was it worth $1.00 to you? and Learning without School! We began educating our children in 1985, when our eldest was five. In truth, we had helped them learn what they need to learn since they were born. I am a passionate advocate of allowing children to learn unhindered by unnecessary stress and competition, meeting developmental needs in ways that suit their individual learning styles and preferences. Ours was a homeschooling, unschooling and natural learning family! There are hundreds of articles on this site to help you build confidence as a home educating family. We hope that your home educating adventure is as satisfying as ours was! Beverley Paine
